Consulting for studio design Fandango Recording offers consulting services for designing and building recording studios, with separate control room, recording room and other amenities. With the advent of computers and digital technology, having your own recording studio is not a dream anymore. The home recording phenomenon is here to stay and the products generated are definitely CD-quality. Lately, music for film, advertising, demos and final products in all music genres are created in home recording studios. The trend is quite clear and the reason is simple: major studios do not have the ability to efficiently manage small and medium projects due to the overhead cost. The home recording studio is arguably the most important tool a musician can have in order to maintain his independence and freedom of creation. As a matter of fact, how many of you people have dreamt of having a real studio in your own house? It is definitely within your reach to achieve a high level of sound quality while making music in the comfort of your home. You can start a business and be able to handle small and medium projects, and yes, you can make money. The good news is that the investment required is affordable compared with large studios: on average it costs less than a tenth of what it used to cost a decent equipped professional recording studio fifteen years ago. Another good news is that musicians started to understand that a home recording studio can be extremely professional while charging low rates, because these studios don't have a lot of overhead expenses and they are passing the savings to their customers, so they can get their business. It may be easier and more affordable than you think, but you have to go through a couple of stages. The most important is to write down a business plan; focus on the market target and how the business is going to be run. Regardless on how the plan is laid down, it has three major parts: the business, the marketing and the financial part. A big chunk in the whole equation of the business are the facilities and the equipment. I know there are many people out there who are familiar with a studio's problems, and that there are books about how to built and design a studio. After building my own studio and showing it to different people, I was surprised when I was asked to design a studio instead of doing recording. I did just that and it worked out great; the people were very happy. This is when I realized that many people do not have the skill of designing and building even if they have the info about it; and, indeed, it takes a lot of work, patience and skills. The question is: how can Fandango help? Well, consider this: you have the space required and budget. These are the project prerequisites. The project has to provide answers about shaping rooms to make them sound good, about wall and window construction, acoustical treatment, isolation, power and audio lines and their layout, avoiding buzz and hum, dealing with heating and air conditioning and many other things. You may have a good equipment setup, but all the mix-downs sound bad and, no matter what you do, this just doesn't go away. The reason can be a wrong acoustic treatment which can be solved with just a bit of experience. Sound easy? I'm quite sure there are guys who can tell you some ugly stories about all these... Another major problem is choosing the equipment. This is not an easy task; trying to keep the cost as low as possible while maintaining a certain level of quality throughout the whole recording chain (a chain is only as strong as its weakest link) is a real challenge. Just imagine spending tens of thousands of dollars in mic preamps, high quality processors, expensive mic's, but use an unbalanced audio path, or even worse, an audio card that can not take advantage of the rest of the equipment (ok., I admit, I may have exaggerated a bit, but you get the idea and, believe it or not, it is way too easy to make such a mistake). Fandango provides both consulting for the project and, if requested, the construction part and the equipment setup.
